In addition, we will travel up to 200 miles to manage any lake over 150 surface acres.

What kind of professional equipment does LakePro, Inc. use?

LakePro, Inc. operates state-of-the-art Carolina-Skiff Fiberglass Boats with 15 to 40 HP Outboard Motors that ranging from 12' to 18', all integrated with pressurized Honda Pump Spray and Spreading Systems.

How often does LakePro, Inc. have to treat a water-body?

Every water-body is different, treatments are based on evaluation and analysis of the lake, how the lake was previously managed, customer data and input and what are the objectives for the future. Once all information is acquired, a management plan will be proposed and completed to reach the target results. Most LakePro, Inc. customers have a seasonal treatment program.

The customer and LakePro, Inc. agree on the number of treatments, which are evenly spread from April through September. Depending on the number of treatments, your water body can receive treatments weekly or just one time in the season. Along with our contract, LakePro, Inc. also provides a "Contract Breakdown" that provides approximate dates of your treatments. However, weather conditions throughout the summer can lead to excessive algal blooms, in which case LakePro, Inc. will treat your water body as necessary and readjust your remaining schedule.

Who monitors LakePro, Inc. in the State of Michigan?

We are licensed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture. Permits are required to chemically control nuisance aquatic plants, algae, and swimmer's itch. The Program staff that regulates the use of pesticides through the permit process in the State of Michigan and any service companies such as LakePro, Inc. is The DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY LAND AND WATER MANAGEMENT DIVISION INLAND LAKES AND WETLANDS UNIT AQUATIC NUISANCE CONTROL (MDEQ).

Department of Environmental Quality

When can we start treatments?

In order to begin treatments, LakePro, Inc. must have a signed contract and a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Permit. Generally, LakePro receives an approved permit in about 4-6 weeks. The DEQ permit allows LakePro, Inc. to apply pesticides from April 1st through October 30th. Once the contract and permit are both received, LakePro can begin treatments immediately. It is beneficial to secure your contract and permit in the non-treatment months, so LakePro can begin treatments immediately in the spring. Also, not all water bodies need a permit, so please contact us to discuss your unique water body.

What will happen if I water my lawn with recently treated water?

If you used treated water on your lawn the risk for damage is minimal. The highest risk is to newly planted flowers, vegetable gardens, and other delicate plants. If after using treated water you see any damage (i.e. spotting, wilting, browning), we recommend rinsing off the plants with water from your house (garden hose). Established turf grass is hardy, in 11 plus years of treatment we have never seen a lawn, established trees, bushes, or even established flowers significantly damaged by newly treated water.

Are any of these products harmful to people or wildlife?

The federal label for all aquatic pesticide products used in Michigan currently have no swimming restriction on them. Extensive testing indicaes that a swimmer will not come into contact long enough or at a dose large enough to cause adverse affects. That means, according to the federal label, one could enter the water just after a aquatic herbicide was applied without adverse effect.

The yellow signs we post list a swimming restriction of 24 hours. This is a MDNRE requirement. The true purpose of the 24 hour swimming restriction is so that the newly applied herbicide has enough contact time with the plant to be effective. Swimming and other recreational activity tends to stir up lake bottom sediments thus reducing herbicide effectiveness.

If you unknowingly enter a water-body within 24 hours of treatment, as an added safety measure, we recommend taking a warm shower for about 10 minutes; this will insure any dermal contact is neutralized.

Extensive studies have been done to insure that the products we use offer optimum safety. Please use this link to learn more: http://www.btny.purdue.edu/aquatic/.

How long does it take for the plants to be controlled?

All herbicides tend to effect plants within different time frames. Some herbicides can act within a few days, though these tend to affect the stem and leaves meaning re-growth can occur within 6-8 weeks. Other herbicides can take from 2 weeks to 10 weeks to have total effect. The exchange for the longer effect time is longer control of the plant, anywhere from a whole season, to multiple seasons of control.

How long will it take for these plants to re-grow?

The type of plant and the method of control determine how quickly plant re-growth can be observed. Typically we plan on 1-2 weed treatment cycles per season. Algae tend to grow before aquatic plants, so multiple treatments OR MORE may be required.
